Repro steps
- 1.Navigate to the Angular Material Sort Header Examples page (/components/sort/examples).
- 2.Dismiss the cookie consent banner by clicking 'OKAY, GOT IT'.
- 3.In the 'Sorting overview' table, click the 'Dessert (100g)' header once to sort ascending.
- 4.Click the 'Dessert (100g)' header a second time to sort descending.
- 5.Hover the cursor over the currently unsorted 'Calories' column header.
Expected
Hovering over an unsorted column header should display an ascending arrow (↑) previewing the initial sort direction.
Actual
Hovering over the unsorted 'Calories' column displays a descending arrow (↓), inheriting the sort direction state of the previously active sorted column.
Evidence
visualAt 7.0s, the 'Dessert (100g)' column correctly sorts ascending with an upward arrow (↑). At 9.0s, clicking it again sorts descending with a downward arrow (↓).
visualAt 11.0s, hovering cursor over 'Calories' reveals a downward arrow (↓) next to 'Calories' while 'Dessert (100g)' also displays a downward arrow (↓).
consoleConsole warning logged: Hover on Calories (unsorted): ariaLabel="" — if it says "descending" that is the bug; indicator transform=""

### Summary When a table column is sorted descending, hovering over an inactive/unsorted column header previews a downward sort arrow instead of the default ascending sort arrow. ### Steps to Reproduce 1. Open Angular Material Sort Header Examples (`/components/sort/examples`) (0.0s). 2. In the **Sorting overview** table, click the **Dessert (100g)** column header once to sort ascending (6.2s). 3. Click the **Dessert (100g)** column header again to sort descending (8.5s). 4. Hover over an unsorted column header, such as **Calories** (11.0s). ### Expected Behavior The hover preview arrow on an unsorted column should point upwards (ascending `↑`), representing the default direction when sorting that column. ### Actual Behavior The hover preview arrow on **Calories** points downwards (descending `↓`), incorrectly reflecting the sort direction state of the previously active column. *Recorded with SceneRecap.*
